The police arrive with the news that they found Sadie’s body at the beach across town. One of the few mentions came from Kelly O’Donnell, president of the correspondents’ association, who briefly noted some 100 journalists killed in Israel’s 6-month-old war against Hamas in Gaza. In an evening dedicated in large part to journalism, O’Donnell cited journalists who have been detained across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich in Russia and Austin Tice, who is believed to be held in Syria. Families of both men were in attendance as they have been at previous dinners. An election-year roast of President Joe Biden before journalists, celebrities and politicians at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner on Saturday butted up against growing public discord over the Israel-Hamas war. The Last House Guest is the latest thriller by Megan Miranda, author of All the Missing Girls. The book tells the story of Avery, a girl struggling to understand the death of her best friend, Sadie.

The entire story is narrated from the perspective of Avery Greer, whose story begins the day of the Plus-One Party in 2017. Avery manages rental properties for the wealthy Loman family in her hometown of Littleport, Maine; the Plus-One Party is being held at one of these properties. Sadie’s brother Parker, his girlfriend Luce, and Avery’s ex-boyfriend Connor are also present at the party.

End of Year Reading Wrap Up

After Avery’s grandmother died, Avery was alone, and the ridiculously wealthy Lomans seemed to welcome her into the family, even giving her a job as property manager for their coastal rentals and a place to live in their guesthouse. When Avery finds Sadie’s phone hidden in the rental cottage where last year’s Plus-One party was held, she turns it in to the police—after doing a bit of snooping. Additionally, someone’s been breaking into the rentals, and Sadie’s brooding older brother, Parker, is acting strangely. Sadie’s death is looking less and less like a suicide, and Avery is at the top of the suspect list.

About The Author

She remembers that Sadie had a copy of her car keys; Avery decides to check her trunk. She finds dents and scratches suggesting Sadie was inside, alive and fighting to get out. Avery also finds the missing buckle from one of Sadie’s broken shoes.

Trump did not attend Saturday’s dinner and never attended the annual banquet as president. In 2011, he sat in the audience, and glowered through a roasting by then-President Barack Obama of Trump’s reality-television celebrity status. Obama’s sarcasm then was so scalding that many political watchers linked it to Trump’s subsequent decision to run for president in 2016. As Avery begins to dig into the events surrounding Sadie’s death, she unearths more than she thought. Tensions rise between the town locals and summer visitors, while the secrets of the past find their way into the present.

Criticism of the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has spread through American college campuses, with students pitching encampments and withstanding police sweeps in an effort to force their universities to divest from Israel. Counterprotests back Israel’s offensive and complain of antisemitism. Other protesters lay sprawled motionless on the pavement, next to mock-ups of flak vests with “press” insignia. Despite being similar in age, Biden said, the two presidential hopefuls have little else in common. Former Trump Vice President Mike Pence has refused to endorse Trump’s reelection bid.

With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year’s event. Just before the dedication of Sadie’s memorial, Detective Collins finds Avery in the Loman house. She presents her evidence, which he sets on fire in the office trash can. Collins was the first officer at the scene of her parents’ accident, and the Lomans paid him to cover up all traces of Parker’s involvement. Whoever killed Sadie used Avery’s car to take her from the party to the bluffs, and the evidence left behind could be used to frame her.

Counterprotests back Israel’s offensive and complain of anti-Semitism. They cheered when at one point someone inside the Washington Hilton — where the dinner has been held for decades — unfurled a Palestinian flag from a top-floor hotel window. Mr Biden’s speech, which lasted around 10 minutes, made no mention of the ongoing war in Gaza.
